SO Coach is approved by MHFA England to deliver Adult Mental Health First Aid & Youth Mental Health First Aid courses. The training follows the MHFA England delivery methods.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.

Mental Health First Aid won’t teach you to be a therapist, it will provide you with skills including, how to listen, reassure, respond and encourage someone.

Course Overview

 

A two-day practical skills and awareness course designed to give you:

  • A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, including your own

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening

  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support

Mental Health First Aid courses are for everyone aged 16 upwards. 

We deliver the course in four sessions

  1. Mental Health First Aid, mental health, and depression.

  2. Depression (continued) and suicidal crisis.

  3. Anxiety, personality disorders, eating  disorders and self-harm. 

  4. Psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

One-day Mental Health Champion

Course Overview

A one day awareness and skills course which will teach you to:

  • Recognise the main signs and symptoms of common mental health issues

  • Provide initial support

  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help

  • Be mindful of your own wellbeing

  • Develop an understanding of how you can create and maintain a healthier workforce or community

Intended Audience

  • Anyone who wants to achieve a greater understanding of mental health

  • Those who have a genuine interest to champion mental health.

  • People in an organisation who truly believe that we can break the stigma around mental health.

 

Mental Health Champion courses are for everyone aged 16 upwards.

We deliver the course in two sessions

  1. Mental Health First Aid, mental health, depression, anxiety, other mental health issues and early warning signs

  2. Applying the action plan, approaching, listening, giving support, encouraging professional help, other supports, recovery and building a healthy workplace

Course Overview

This half day course will enable your Mental Health First Aiders and MHFA Champions to refresh their skills in the same way your physical first aiders do.

 

The course will support your Mental Health First Aiders and MHFA Champions by:

  • Renewing their skills 

  • Updating their knowledge of mental health supports 

  • Giving them the chance to practice applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan

 

Intended Audience

Anyone who has previously completed the MHFA England Mental Health First Aid course or Mental Health Champion course. It's a great way to demonstrate commitment to treating mental health and physical health equally.

Half-day Mental Health Awareness

During a half day session you will develop:

  • An understanding of what mental health is and how to challenge stigma

  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues

  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing

  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue

It really is a great fast paced course, with content at an appropriate level you will learn how to start a conversation and 'Take 10 Together'.

Suicide First Aid

What is Suicide First Aid?

 

Teaching the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills that can be applied in any professional or personal setting, captured in a one-day event (accredited by City and Guilds of London) or a half day lite event.

 

The Suicide First Aid sessions have some interactive elements that can be emotionally engaging. The sessions are for anyone who seeks greater understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide.

Course Overview

This half day (4 hour) or full day (8 hour) session will provide the readiness to act when needed to deal suicide first aid situations. Understand approaches and process of suicide intervention including desired outcomes. Know the importance of self-reflection and personal impact when working with suicide and people at risk.

 

  • The impact and value of personal and professional experience with suicide

  • Barriers that prevent people at risk seeking help

  • Prevalence of suicide thoughts and suicide behaviours

  • The Signs of Suicide and the Suicide-Safety Guide

  • Partnership working and community resources
